The Regulations — Keep Your Lot Safe and Secure for Everyone
The Americans With Disabilities Act became law in 1990 and it prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in areas of public life. This includes schools, transportation, hotels, restaurants, etc. One of the provisions included with the act would come to mean that places of businesses would have to implement accommodations to facilitate access for people with physical disabilities. This includes designated parking spots for ease of access.
Accessible parking spaces are then required for each facility on a site, including lots and garages. These requirements apply equally to private enterprises and employee or restricted parking. The law requires certain spaces to be accessible to vans and has its own system of calculation that determines how many spaces you need depending on the size of your lot. The requirements state that these spaces must be placed with the best access of entrances and dispersed among accessible entrances.
ADA Ramps
The ADA has very specific requirements when it comes to ramps. These are meant to assist people in wheelchairs and others with walkers, stroller, or other physical impairments. ADA Ramp specifications require a 1:12 ramp slope ratio, which equals to one foot of wheelchair ramp for each inch of rise. They must also be a minimum of 36 inches wide to allow for wheelchairs. At the same time, there needs to be a minimum of a 5X5 flat and unobstructed area at the top and bottom of the ramp for wheelchairs. There are requirements for the handrails on both sides of the ramps, their width, and radius.
Don’t risk getting penalized for non-compliance. Call the professionals to lay your ramps and striping.
